Store Spotlight: Legacy Records, Dumbo, Brooklyn
Owning a record store wasn't a goal ofVictorious De Costa, Barkim Salgado or Haile Ali, the three co-owners of Legacy, which opened in Brookyln's Dumbo neighborhood in August of 2021.
However, each had amassed a massive collection of vinyl through their respective DJing, rapping and producing careers.
As Victorious says in a video on the Legacy website, "I'd had my own records since junior high school, maybe elementary school, and I felt like I would one day leave my records to my children, but I don't have any children. The world is my child. So, Legacy for me is finding the joy of sharing my collection with the world."
With all three owners hailing from Caribbean descent, Legacy enjoys shining a spotlight on reggae, soca and merengue music, but the shop also boasts a wide array of jazz, hip-hop, R&B, rock releases and more, all inside a shop designed to resemble a 70s-era apartment.
Proudly Black, Latinx and BIPOC owed, Legacy is designed to feel like home. Check out some of the photos on their website. Legacy is also a member of the FAMS coalition.

Newly remastered from the original tapes, this reissue features Patti LaBelle, George Benson, Wilton Felder. As with its predecessor, The Poet II found both commercial & critical success on both sides of the Atlantic with the UK's NME naming it Best Album of 1984. Among the album's highlights are 3 duets w/ LaBelle including "Love Has Finally Come At Last" which was a presence on Billboard's Hot Soul Singles chart for 17 weeks, ultimately rising to #3. Expanded package w/ new liner notes.
Multi-platinum, Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/producer Daniel Caesar effortlessly floats across the gamut of contemporary R&B with his third studio album NEVER ENOUGH. Led by the singles "Do You Like Me?" (co-produced with Dylan Wiggins + Raphael Saadiq) and "Let Me Go" (co-produced with Rami Yacoub + Sevn Thomas), the Canadian savant touches on the inevitability of time and human error.
SNRK's previous album, Life After was a collection of music the band wrote during darker times, during the pandemic. The songs on this new album are a reflection of a transitional era, of getting back on track, of finding and expressing their confidence in themselves and in their futures. They are honing in on their sound, exploring new cadences and flows, working with new producers and some familiar faces and bringing in new feature artists, like Dillanponders. Translucent blue vinyl.
RENAISSANCEis the highly anticipated new album from global icon Beyonc. Packed with rousing anthems that resonate with everybody,RENAISSANCEis a culmination of freedom and escape that encourages unimaginable jubilation, agency, and movement with abandon. The singular intent ofRENAISSANCE,a reinvention of four on the floor,is to showcase music that stirs you from the soul and encourages your dancing feet. It is a celebration of a club era when anyone who felt like an outsider sought each other and formed a community of freedom-seekers to express themselves creatively through the rhythm, which we still celebrate today.
Cited as one of the most exciting young artists in Nashvilles burgeoning soul scene by Rolling Stone, Love You Anyway is the second full-length LP and brand-new album from the Philadelphia-born Devon Gilfillian. With an incisive eye and unassuming swagger, along with Devons deep knowledge and love of vintage soul, R&B, rock and hip-hop, Love You Anyway re-imagines modern soul music. First vinyl pressing will be on limited edition milky clear vinyl.
Four times BRIT nominated, RAYE is one of the most streamed artists in the world with over 2.3 billion streams of her music. She has a double-platinum, four platinum, two gold and three silver singles to her name. She is also indisputably one of the UK's premier songwriters. Her songs have amassed over 3 billion streams, having written for some of the world's biggest artists including: John Legend, Ellie Goulding, Khalid, David Guetta, Diplo, and Beyonce. In 2019 she was awarded The BMI Impact Award in recognition of her 'ground-breaking artistry, creative vision and impact on the future of music.
During the summer of 2021, her cries of frustration for not being able to release her album were heard worldwide, leading to a mutual separation from her label and allowing her to carve her own path. Having made her public tirade, followed by her personal 'declaration of independence', Raye in effect has obligated herself to deliver the ground-breaking first album that her 2019 BMI award prophesied. In 2022 she was nominated for the Ivors Songwriter of the year, landed R1 Brits List, made her debut solo TV performance on Jools Holland and made the face of Spotify's November Equal campaign. On February 3rd, 2023, RAYE will release her debut My 21st Century Blues. This is RAYE part two. It's RAYE on her own terms. -It's the RAYE of old, but reloaded. These are songs made by RAYE, for RAYE, but within that they're for everyone who has faced and overcome adversity. They're also anthems for other women in the industry, or stuck in a cycle of misogyny.
