Madonna collaborated with Dallas Austin, Babyface, Dave Hall and Nellee Hooper, and decided to move into a more R&B direction and a generally more mainstream radio friendly sound. Madonna tried to soften her image after her sexually explicit works during ''Erotica'' period.

''Bedtime Stories'' reached the top of Australian albums chart, where it became her fifth number-one album. In the United States, the album debuted and peaked at number three on the Billboard 200 chart.
